Yeah, every other super soldier you fight up to this point were just prototypes. He's pretty easy though, just stand back and shoot him with your Thompson. The first one is this weird mutant zombie thing that throws blinding spirits at you. You'll never get bored of tearing them to shreds. So overall, RtCW definitely has a really decent roster of enemies. It's not that big of a deal though, since they only show up in like one level. They're these weird two-legged mutant bastards that roll at you at super sonic speeds and can practically insta-kill you with electricity. There are also the Lopez, which are so indescribably fucking annoying that even writing about them makes me angry. These guys can really suck a dick, they will shred you in seconds if you're not careful. There's also the super soldiers, who are these big cyborg mutant Nazis who wield either a venom gun, rocket launcher, tesla gun, or all three if you're feeling lucky. You've got normal Nazis that run and shoot, and can be equipped with a few different weapons, you've got the elite guards, who are highly-trained young women in tight leather suits who are quite acrobatic and wield a silenced sten submachine-gun, paratroopers, who fall from the sky and wield FG42s, flamethrower Nazis, who run at you with, you guessed it, a flamethrower, and other weird zombies and shit. No surprise there, but we do still have some decent enemy variety. It was quite intuitive in that game, and it still is here. The game also dawns a weapon selection system very similar to Half-Life, where each number key has multiple weapons assigned to it, and you can cycle through them by pressing the key multiple times. Having all those weapons available to you at any time ends up feeling more like a necessity than a privilege. It will kick your ass if you're not being smart. I only played on the medium difficulty, and I still found this game hard as shit. You might think that being able to hold every single weapon in the game at once might make the game too easy, and you would be wrong, times a thousand. It truly makes you feel like a badass being able to use whatever weapon whenever you want, and it allows for alot of creative freedom for the player. Again, you hold all of these weapons AT ONCE, throughout the entire game. You've got the classic MP40, a silenced sten machine gun, an FG42, a goddamn flamethrower, the 'venom gun' (which is basically a souped up minigun), a tesla gun, several types of grenades, two snipers, etc. There's so many this time, I'll just mention a few. They're all really good too, well except for the pistols, but that's pretty standard. You have a HEFTY arsenal of weapons here, which you can hold all at once, thank god. The gameplay in RtCW is honestly top-tier, especially compared to most other war shooters. It's quite simple compared to later games, but I still quite like it. You play as the recently captured B.J Blazkowicz, who is now in charge of stopping this resurrection ritual, while also killing as many Nazis as possible in the process. Centuries later now, the Nazis accidentally uncover his tomb, and plan to resurrect him to help win the war. The story here is that, long ago, an uber-powerful dark knight was sealed away for eternity by some wizard guy. It gave the game a very spooky atmosphere that no other Wolfenstein game has tried to replicate. It was quite different, but I liked it alot. Yknow, ancient catacombs, zombies, the paranormal, uber-powerful dark knights from centuries ago, that kind of stuff. While the newer Wolfenstein games put a large emphasis on more futuristic elements, like robots and the such, RtCW (and its sequel, Wolfenstein 2009) put a much larger focus on the occult. Just like the New Colossus, I found myself getting completely absorbed into this one, and I, once again, beat it in only a week. Originally released in 2001, RtCW serves as a reboot of the classic Wolfenstein 3D. Recommended SubredditsĪnd I'm back again for the fourth Wolfenstein game I've played and reviewed, this time it's one that many consider to be the pinnacle of the franchise and a gold standard for military shooters, Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
